I Did Not Expect This

The Washington Post reports, on the basis of a letter from IG Fine to Sen. Leahy:

The Justice Department is investigating whether departing Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales gave false or misleading testimony to Congress on a broad range of issues, including the Bush administration’s warrantless surveillance program and the removal of nine U.S. attorneys last year, the lead investigator said today.

The disclosure by Inspector General Glenn A. Fine shows that internal investigations that began with the prosecutor firings have widened substantially to include a focus on Gonzales’s actions and statements.

We will see what comes of it.  It’s expanding beyond the allegation of possible witness-coaching by the AG of Monica Goodling.  Serious questions have been raised, and an investigation is appropriate.

The rule of law is a deeply embedded tradition in this country.  It would take a lot more effort and competence than this administration is capable of mustering to root it out— even of its own DOJ.

That this investigation can get legs is an encouraging reminder that the Bush administration is an aberration in our history.
